What Good Hair Looks Like II

This work confronts inherited beauty standards shaped by colorism, texturism, and hair politics in Bahamian culture. In our culture, “good hair” is closer to whiteness, and anything else needs a hot comb. Even our institutions reinforce these messages; some hair types are accepted, while others, like locs or a shape-up, can get you penalized or suspended. The boundaries of professionalism and acceptability are drawn around whiteness, and we are told to fall in line. With the slogan, “All Hair is Good Hair,” I address these internalized messages. The elements represent different stages of our relationship with our hair, going from shame and manipulation to reclamation. Through the work, I aim to reclaim what “good hair” means on our own terms.
